What 31 includes

• This division covers the production of furniture and its parts, excluding sheets and plates of glass, stone, concrete, or similar materials for furniture production. The processes used in furniture production are standard methods involving the forming of material and the assembly of components, including cutting, forming, and laminating. Product design, due to its aesthetic and functional properties, is an important aspect of the production process.
• Some processes used in furniture production are similar to those used in other industrial manufacturing divisions. For example, cutting and assembly occur in the production of wooden trusses, the production of which is classified in the appropriate subclasses of Division 16 "Manufacture of products of wood and cork, except furniture; manufacture of articles of straw and plaiting materials." However, many processes distinguish the production of wooden furniture from the production of wood products.
• Similarly, the production of metal furniture employs techniques that are also used in the production of division products, classified in the appropriate subclasses of Division 25 "Manufacture of fabricated metal products, except machinery and equipment." The process of molding plastic furniture is similar to molding other plastic products. However, the production of plastic furniture is tending to become a specialized activity.
