What 31 includes

• This department encompasses the manufacture of furniture and furniture components, excluding panels and sheets of glass, stone, concrete, or similar materials used as furniture parts. The processes employed in furniture manufacturing are standard methods for shaping materials (planing) and assembling components, including cutting, forming, and laminating. The design of the product (piece of furniture), in terms of both aesthetic and functional properties, is an important aspect of the manufacturing process.
• Some of the processes used in furniture manufacturing are similar to those used in other production areas (for example, cutting and assembly processes are also found in the manufacture of timber beams, which fall under Department 16). However, the manufacturing of wooden furniture differs from the manufacturing of wood products due to the wide variety of processes involved. Similarly, the manufacturing of metal furniture employs processes also used in the production of rolled products in Department 25. The forming process for furniture made of plastics is similar to that used for other plastic products. However, the production of plastic furniture is usually a specialized activity.
