What 72 includes
- This division includes the activities of three types of research and development : 1) basic research : experimental or theoretical work undertaken primarily with a view to acquire new knowledge of the underlying foundations of phenomena and observable facts, without considering the application or specific use ; 2) applied research : original investigation undertaken in order to acquire new knowledge, directed primarily towards a goal or target specific practice ; 3) experimental development : systematic work, drawing on the insights existing research and/or practical experience, aiming to produce new the materials, products and devices, to implement new processes, systems and services, and to improving substantially those already produced or put in place.
- Research and experimental development of this division shall not be considered as ancillary activities. They are divided into the following two categories : natural sciences and engineering ; social sciences and humanities.
- This division also includes : The development and production of prototypes in the first goal to make additional improvements, whether or not they are associated with the production.
