What B includes
- Mining and quarrying include the extraction of minerals occurring naturally as solids (coal and ores) , liquids (petroleum) or gases (natural gas) , from mines, seabed, and the extraction of salt from sea water, brine, and other saline waters. Extraction can be achieved by different methods such as underground or surface mining, well operation, seabed mining etc.
- This section includes supplementary activities aimed at preparing the crude materials for marketing, for example, crushing, grinding, cleaning, drying, sorting, beneficiation and concentration of ores and liquefaction of natural gas. Mining activities are classified into divisions, groups and classes on the basis of the principal mineral produced. Divisions 05, 06 are concerned with mining and quarrying of fossil fuels (coal, lignite, petroleum, gas) ; divisions 07, 08 concern metal ores, various minerals and quarry products.
- Some of the technical operations of this section, particularly related to the extraction of hydrocarbons, may also be carried out for third parties by specialised units as an industrial service which is reflected in division 09.
What B excludes
- This section excludes the processing of extracted materials is classified under section C (Manufacturing) , which involves transforming raw materials into finished or semi-finished products. In contrast, the use of extracted materials without undergoing any transformation, particularly for construction purposes, is categorised under section F (Construction) . Additionally, the bottling of natural spring and mineral waters at the source, such as springs and wells (see class 1105) .
- Environmental and land restoration activities related to mining are addressed under different classifications. The remediation of mine sites, which includes efforts to restore environmental quality after mining operations (see class 3900) . Similarly, overburden removal and the contouring of land at mine sites, which are essential for site preparation and rehabilitation, (see class 4312) .
