Subclass · Klassifikation der Wirtschaftszweige (2025)

Where 38.21.2 sits

  1. E Water supply; sewerage, waste managemant and remediation activities
  2. 38 Waste collection, recovery and disposal activities
  3. 38.2 Waste recovery
  4. 38.21 Materials recovery
  5. 38.21.2 Recovery of sorted materials

What 38.21.2 includes

  • This subclass includes material recovery from waste streams in the form of (1) separating and sorting recyclables from streams of non-hazardous waste or (2) sorting mixed recyclables (e.g. paper, plastics, used beverage cans and metals) into different categories.
  • Examples of mechanical or chemical conversion processes carried out include:
  • Recovery of iron from clinker
  • Recovery of metals from photographic waste (e.g., fixer solution or photographic film and paper)
  • Production of rubber powder from rubber waste and scrap, including decontamination, separation (elimination) of fragments, and devulcanization
  • Sorting and mechanical processing (e.g., cleaning, grinding) of plastics to obtain secondary raw materials
  • Processing (aging, cleaning, sorting) of incineration slag into secondary raw materials (metals, additives)
  • Crushing, cleaning, and sorting of glass
  • Crushing, cleaning, and sorting of other waste (e.g., construction debris) to obtain secondary raw materials
  • Processing of food, beverage, and tobacco waste and residues into secondary raw materials
  • Recycling of waste oil, processing of used cooking oils and fats into secondary raw materials
  • Recovery of silver from chemical waste, except by electrolytic refining
  • Phosphorus recovery from sewage sludge incineration
  • Recycling of textile and clothing products through mechanical, thermal, or chemical processes
  • Production of compost from waste
  • Production of biogas from waste, not for gas or energy supply

What 38.21.2 excludes

  • Production of new end products from secondary raw materials (including self-produced products) (e.g., spinning yarn from shredded spinning fibers, producing pulp from waste paper, retreading tires, and producing metal from scrap metal), see corresponding classes in Section C;
  • Reprocessing of nuclear fuel, see 20.13.0;
  • Remelting of plastics to produce granules or compounds, see 20.16.0;
  • Remelting of ferrous waste and scrap, see 24.10.0;
  • Recovery of silver from film waste, see 24.41.0;
  • Production of biogas from the biodegradable fraction of waste for gas supply, see 35.21.2;
  • Energy recovery by thermal treatment of waste, see 38.22.0;
  • Disposal of waste without recovery and prior treatment, see Group 38.3;
  • Landfilling or long-term storage of hazardous waste, see 38.32
  • Wholesale of recyclable materials, see 46.87.0
